3 simple steps to check the health of your current roof

Whether you have a Ridge Meadows roof, Tricity roof, Langley roof, etc, all face the same thing and that’s a lot of sunshine and a lot of rain. Over time, this wreaks havoc on your roof.

At Whonnock Roofing and Gutters Ltd, the question we get more than anything else is, “Do I need a new roof?” Or “How do I know when it’s time to get a new roof.

These are great questions, but it’s not quite as difficult as you might think to answer. As a home owner, in the Ridge Meadows area and beyond, there are 3 simple things you can do to determine whether you need a professional to come out and check your roof.

  1. How do the gutters look? If you are okay with putting up a ladder and looking inside you gutter you may notice that the gutters are full of granules. This happens over time as the shingles slowly breakdown from UV exposure. Along with the sun, here in the Ridge Meadows are, we also get a lot of rain. The rain and wind take the loosened granules into the gutter. Over time, this accumulates and is a good unification that a new roof may be needed.
  2. Moisture/Wet Spots in the attic. Every 6 months you should pop your head inside the attic with a spot light and do a visual check of the roof decking. This is a simple 5 minute chore and it can save you thousands, of a slow leak is detected. These slow leaks, sometimes don’t show up inside the house until it’s too late and a lot of damage can be done to the roof deck and trusses. This can be a huge added cost if it is ignored.
  3. The roofing shingles are missing or have disintegrated into almost nothing. I know this may go without saying, but you would be surprised that roofs may look “okay” on one side of the roof by the other side can be disastrous. Be sure to look at/inspect all sides and facets of your roof lines.
